Nationwide Heavy Equipment Shipping

Oversize and Overwide Requirements

Permit and Oversize Escort Information for Lower 48 Continental USA.

Overwide Information

Any shipment over 8ft 6in wide is considered overwide. Transporter will need to get an overwide permit. Most major highways in the US require escorts over 12ft wide. In local 2 lane roads, some cities require escorts over 10ft wide. Check each local state and cities for requirements.

Over height Requirements

In most states the height restriction is anything over 13ft 6in high will require an over height permit. In some states the height limit is 14ft. Check each states local requirements. Each state also has rules for extra over height. In that case, trucking companies will need escorts with pole trucks to drive ahead to make sure the driver doesnt go over a low overpass, etc..

Over Weight Requirements

The total weight of a truck with trailer and the item on the trailer can not be over 80,000 pounds in every state without special permits. Most states also measure axel weight. The average axel weight can not be over 20,000 pounds. Trucking companies will need to check with local state laws to get exact weight limits as well as permits. Super Loads (very heavy) will require escorts.

Over Length Requirements

In most states a truck pulling a trailer cannot be over 65ft long unless you are pulling 2 trailers (doubles). In any case over length permits are available. States also require escorts to follow behind, in front or with very long loads, both.

Hours and Day Requirements for Oversize Loads

Most states have restrictions on when a wide load or oversize load can be moving on their roadways. Most areas of the country will not let you drive during night or dark hours with an oversize load. Most states will not allow driving on weekends an holidays with wide or over size loads.
